Basement conversions; take one!
Simon Pole, Structural Engineer and Building Surveyor reports.
It is now so expensive to move that more and more people are extending every aspect of their home in preference to moving. The loft is the most common place to start for bedrooms but what about more living space. If ground floor extensions are not possible or have already taken place, digging a basement is now a popular choice.
Be careful however as this work is complex and needs very careful consideration. I am currently surveying some of the first generation basements installed just 5 to 10 years ago and finding all sorts of technical problems.
